Buttercup Bake Shop, a bakery known for its buttercream cupcakes, will open in late August or early September at 166 West 72nd Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues. The space was formerly occupied by My Pie Pizzeria Romana. This will be the fifth location in Manhattan for the bakery, which also has two shops in midtown and two downtown. The home of the original Buttercup Bake Shop was right across the street at 141 West 72 St. This location closed in 2000. The bakery chain was founded by Jennifer Appel, who also co-founded Magnolia Bakery a few years earlier. Buttercup sells classic American desserts including various pies (such as apple crumb, coconut creme, and lemon meringue) and an assortment of cookies.

Made in New York Pizza is opening a second Upper West Side location in mid July at 271 Amsterdam Avenue between 72nd and 73rd Streets. The space was previously occupied by Joe’s Coffee. Made in New York Pizza is currently at 421 Amsterdam Avenue at 80th Street (that location will remain open.) The pizza place sells a variety of pies including: white spinach, buffalo chicken, vodka, veggie, and gluten free pizza.

Reiss, a London-based clothing company which sells “modern menswear, womenswear, accessories, and childrenswear that transcend time and trends,” according to the website, closed the Upper West Side store at 197-199 Columbus Avenue (69th Street). The last day was June 27th. The sign in the window says, “After years of being part of the Upper West Side community it is with a heavy heart that Reiss will be closing this location permanently.” Other Reiss stores can be found in Manhattan on Madison Avenue, Bloomingdale’s (59th Street and Soho), Bleecker Street, and West Broadway. (Thanks to Emily and Upper West Sider for the tips.)

Paper House, the long-time stationery shop that sells “party and paper goods, seasonal decorations and costumes” will be moving on July 1st  to 285 Amsterdam Avenue between 73rd and 74th Street, just a block away from its current location. Paper House opened in 1976. In 2019 the WSR covered the way the shop’s landlord tried to find a new tenant at a higher rent, but, ultimately, stayed with Paper House. The former occupant of 285 Amsterdam was Wild Daisy, a floral shop. We have reports that a dentist will be moving into Paper House’s former location. (Thanks to Lese and Bob for the tips.)

Cloud 9, a smoke shop selling CBD, kratom and vape cigarettes, has opened on Columbus Avenue between 70th and 71st Street. The small space used to be The Mobile Shop, which did cell phone repairs.

Burlington, a retail discount department store, formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory, is moving into the space at 808 Columbus Avenue (100th Street). The previous tenant was MIchael’s, the art supply store. Burlington carries men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, footwear, accessories, home goods, cosmetics, toys, gifts, and, of course, coats. WSR has reached out to Burlington to get an expected opening date. We will update when we have more information. (Thanks to Elizabeth for the tip.)

So excited about Cloud9. My life is incomplete without a 10th CBD-cratom-vape shop in a 4 block radius.

You should try this really great beverage called Cloud Water – it’s a cbd infused sparkling beverage.

Check out the LES and East Village – even more shops 🙁

A dentist (one dentist) is taking over the Paper House space?? But it’s a store front and quite a big one. Beyond depressing. At least walking by Paper House brightened up the block. What kind of window shopping could one do at a dentist’s office??

The proliferation of CBD shops is the ultimate “you can’t always get what you want, but you might get what you need” to those of us who complained for about all the national bank chains gobbling up retail.

Well, we have fewer bank chains and more non-chain retail…but it’s all independent shops trying to get you high!

When I saw Made in NY in the headline I feared the worst! Glad to hear they’re opening a second location.
